When the mouse is not working, how to test the cursor

You may have noticed that when you move the mouse around on your computer screen, sometimes it doesn't work. It seems like the cursor just disappears or moves off the screen. What do you do if you're stuck without a mouse?

Sometimes the cursor will stop working for no apparent reason. This is called "cursor invisibility." The most common cause of this problem is an issue with the video card in your computer. Other possible causes include a damaged cable or a malfunctioning mouse.

Here's how to test the cursor when the mouse isn't working.

If you're using Windows 7 or 8, open up the Start menu and type "mouse" into the search box. Click on the first result, which should be the Control Panel applet. Click on the Hardware tab. Under Device Manager, click on the + sign next to the Video Adapter (or Graphics adapter) and then click on the Properties button. In the properties window, click on the Driver tab. Scroll down until you see the Driver Status column and make sure that the driver status reads Installed.if your mouse click is not working. Click here to check now. 


If not, click on the Update Driver Software button. A new window will pop up asking you to browse for a driver update. Browse to the folder where you installed the drivers and select the file named "driver_name.inf". Double-click on the file to install the driver. Once the installation completes, close the properties window and restart your computer.

Check the power cord.

Sometimes, the problem isn't with your hardware at all. It's possible that there's a loose connection somewhere along the way. Try plugging your mouse into another USB port on your computer. If that works, try plugging it into an older model of your computer. If that still doesn't work, check the power cord itself. Make sure that it's plugged securely into the wall socket. Also, make sure that the power switch on the back of your computer is turned on.

Try another USB port.

If none of those things work, then it's probably something else. Check the connections between the motherboard and the keyboard and monitor. There should be four cables connecting them together. One cable connects the keyboard to the motherboard; one cable connects the monitor to the motherboard; one connects the mouse to the motherboard; and one connects the power supply to the motherboard. If any of these cables aren't connected properly, it could cause the cursor not to appear.

Restart your computer.

Sometimes restarting your computer will fix the problem. If that doesn't work, try unplugging everything except the keyboard and monitor and plugging them back in again. Then turn the computer back on. If that still doesn't work, check the connections between the motherboard, keyboard, and monitor.

Reset your network settings.

Resetting your network settings might help. This includes resetting your router's IP address, DNS server, and DHCP settings.
