Venezuelan-born chemist Pierre C. Nobel discovered the existence of moissanite in a meteor that fell to Earth. He named it Silicon Carbide, or carborundum, after its place of discovery. The stone's sparkle and fire were astounding, so a Tokyo jeweler brought it to the United States where it instantly became popular as an alternative to diamonds.
