Most of us spend our time surrounded by molds, which are often used around windows, doors, and ceilings in interiors. But how much time do we spend analyzing this issue? Precious little, right? But there may come a day when you need to know about casting, so let's give you a head start.

If your home lacks style, character, or charm, adding crown molding may be the solution. You may be surprised at the difference custom crown molding can make to your hallway, living room, den, dining room, family room, or office. In fact, it covers the defects of other carpentry work that has already been completed. A room comes to life after being trimmed properly.

What is crown moulding?

Crown molding is a form of cornice made of decorative moldings installed atop an interior wall. It is also used on doors, windows, pilasters, and cabinets.

Crown molding is a design element that instantly elevates the look of a room, and this particular element is always worth considering when planning your remodeling project.

Application of crown moulding

Crown moulding can be used above doors, windows, or cabinets and is typically installed at the intersection of walls and ceiling. A crown treatment may be a single piece of trim, or a build-up of multiple components to create a more elaborate look. The main element is a piece of trim that is sculpted on one side and flat on the other, with standard angles forming 90 degrees on both its top and bottom edges. There is a triangular void behind the wall and ceiling. Cutting inside and outside corners requires complex cuts at standard angles, typically done with powered compound miter saws that feature detents to aid the user.

A simplified crown can be installed when using manufactured corner blocks, requiring only a simple butt cut at each end of the trim. Plastic and foam versions of the crown, usually with corner blocks, are now available for easy installation for DIY home improvement enthusiasts.

Get to Know Crown Molding Materials

If you're unfamiliar with the trim aisle at your local DIY store, you may be surprised to see that crown moldings are manufactured from a variety of materials. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

Wood crown molding

Wood crown molding is the industry standard, and you can choose from paint-grade pine or if you prefer to stain the trim, a variety of woods including ash, oak, and walnut. A simple wood crown is about $1 per foot for regular pine, and prices go up depending on size and finish. You can pay $30 per foot for a large hardwood crown with elaborate twist designs.

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) molding

(MDF) molding is produced by combining sawdust and resin under pressure to form cut pieces, a low-cost option. Depending on the design, you can get a large, detailed crown for $1 to $7 a foot. A lot of MDF moldings are intended to be painted, but you can find some stock designs with a thin coating suitable for staining. The disadvantage of MDF is its soft nature, which makes it prone to cracks and scratches.

Polystyrene molding

Polystyrene molding is budget-friendly and, like PVC and polyurethane, is quick to cut and install with foam-safe adhesives. It starts at less than $1 a foot, but it decomposes easily and, upon closer inspection, has a texture similar to the foam used to make foam-type coffee cups. Two or three coats of quality paint will help smooth out the surface texture.

Plaster crown molding

Plaster crown molding is ideal for large elaborate designs on high ceilings, such as two-story entryways, where it draws attention and creates a strong visual impact. You won't find this particular item at DIY centers, but you can order custom-cast designs from many traditional woodworkers. Plaster crowns are expensive, up to $30 per foot, and require professional installation.

The entire process is detailed but assured, here at Alex window covering, we have an eye for detail, the ability to take accurate measurements with sophisticated measuring tools, and operate all types of machinery to create attractive and clean-cut fixtures.
